Designing the perfect Milwaukee Quinceañera playlist

I’m writing this post for DJs as well as parents who are thinking about throwing a birthday party for their 15-year old daughter, because this type of event can be a tricky one as it combines longstanding traditions with short-lived ones.

Parents can their children have vastly different preferences for music style and energy and it is especially important to balance the needs of everyone. For this event, it was fortunate that the parents were relaxed and let the kids enjoy themselves to their explicit, bass heavy music consisting of Pop Smoke, Ice Spice and some rapper by the name of MoneySign Suede. Most of the guests hailed from northern Mexico, which reflects traditions that are well-represented in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The dance music is characterized by the movements of Mexican cowboy culture, with attendees responding well to specific huapangos and Peso Pluma over universal, if slightly worn out classics like “La Chona” and “Caballo Dorado”.

As a DJ for this type of event, you may witness unpredictable teen behavior on the dance floor. One moment, a group of giggling girls may rush to dance floor and then ghost everyone for a McDonalds break. Later in the evening, however, the dancing became more consistent and lively. This playlist covers everything from the trap music and the northern Mexican line dances to the latin classics and freestyle music the parents requested.

Should you be planning a similar event, I would encourage you to borrow from this playlist and take songs that you think you’ll need. In a few months, high schoolers will already find these song selections outdated.
